Four Arts to re­place li­brary mu­rals with repli­cas

The beloved Al­bert Herter mu­rals that have graced The So­ci­ety of the Four Arts’ Gio­conda and Joseph King Li­brary en­trance since 1939 have de­te­ri­o­rated so much that a plan to re­place them with repli­cas is in the works.

“It’s been de­ter­mined that less than 10 per­cent of the orig­i­nal Herter ma­te­rial re­mains due to weath- er-re­lated de­te­ri­o­ra­tion,” Four Arts spokes­woman Katie Ed­wards said. “Most of what is vis­i­ble is from 1987 and 2009, when the mu­rals were cleaned, re­touched and given ad­di­tional pro­tec­tion from UV dam­age.”
