West Palm man arrested after running storm checkpoint
A West Palm Beach man was arrested Monday after police said he ran a checkpoint in violation of the county curfew.
Jeffrey Sardinha, 32, was charged with storming the Royal Park Bridge checkpoint and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, police records show.
According to police, an officer was dispatched at 11:41 p.m. to pursue a black sedan that had run the checkpoint in violation of the county’s 8 p.m. curfew and the town’s order restricting access to the island after Hurricane Irma. The officer stopped Sardinha in the 100 block of Royal Palm Way, the report said.
When Sardinha got out of his car, the officer noticed that “his eyes were bloodshot and speech slurred,” the police report says. Sardinha said he was trying to find his way home from a 7-Eleven on 45th Street in West Palm Beach.
A search of the car turned up five 20 mg tablets and two half-tablets of alprazolam, a drug used to treat anxiety and panic disorders, in the driver’s side door, the report said. Sardinha said they were his pills, but he hadn’t taken them in 17 days, the report says. He also acknowledged that he’d driven through the checkpoint.
Sardinha was taken to the Palm Beach County Jail and released on $3,000 bond at around 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to county records.
