Southern bridge work to affect boaters
State DOT announces full channel closure starting Monday through April 30.
It’s good news for progress on the Southern Boulevard Bridge project, but not so great for boaters. In addition to work planned on the bridge this weekend, the Florida Department of Transportation announced s full channel closure starting Monday through April 30.
The closure, approved by the U.S. Coast Guard, means that the bridge will not open for marine traffic on the Intracoastal Waterway.
Requests to open the span will be accommodated between April 17 and April 30, if four hours’ notice is provided. A bridge opening can be requested by calling Clay Bores, project superintendent, at 407-4880738. (The schedule of channel restrictions is published in the U.S. Coast Guard’s Local Notice to Mariners at navcen.uscg. gov.)

Motorists wait as the Southern Boulevard Bridge opens for a boat Wednesday. Because of channel restrictions, boaters can request that the bridge be opened between April 17 and 30 by calling the project superintendent at least four hours in advance.
