A sinkhole? No, town official says
In another incident near undergrounding work, the northbound lane of North Ocean Boulevard near Reef Road was temporarily closed to traffic June 18 when a pothole appeared toward the edge of the pavement.
A pit dug to bury conduit at the site was not completely compacted, Town Engineer Patricia Strayer said. The conduit was capped. When workers tested the lines by blowing air through them, the cap blew off and displaced soil, creating a spot where the asphalt caved.
A barricade was placed over the hole and the lane closed until it was repaired the next morning.
The town sent a traffic alert that initially described it as a sinkhole, but Strayer said it was actually just a pothole about the size of a football.
