Fi­cus ben­jam­ina plants make great hedges — un­til the white­fly in­fests them, caus­ing them to lose most of their leaves.

Palm Beach­ers can be left with hedges that pro­vide about as much pri­vacy as a chain-link fence.

It’s been seven years since scores of the tiny white bugs de­scended upon south­east Florida, de­vour­ing hedges and plants — and leav­ing be­hind a sticky white mess. The town has im­ple­mented a white fly preven­tion pro­gram, but few prop­erty own­ers com­ply with it, land­scape de­signer Jorge Sanchez said.
