Gather round the Yule log
There’s a line in the popular Christmas tune “The MostWonderful Time of the Year” that goes, “There’ll be scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmases long, long ago,” suggesting that storytelling has always been popular around this time of year — maybe elders used to relate their experiences paying off credit-card debt from the Christmas of ’39 and so forth. Local performers Bob Martin, Carol McGiffin, and Jonathan Richards join actress/activist Ali MacGraw to keep this tradition alive with a staged reading of holiday-themed short stories from such authors as O. Henry (“The Gift of the Magi”), Damon Runyon (“Dancing Dan’s Christmas”), and L. Frank Baum (“A Kidnapped Santa Claus”) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, at CollectedWorks Bookstore, 202 Galisteo St., 988-4226. They all do it again at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 22. Refreshments, including hot chocolate, can be purchased at the store’s coffee bar.
