A gift wrapped up in a bow
At the outset of her career, WendyWarner was closely associated with cello superstar Mstislav Rostropovich, who served as her teacher and mentor. All eyes were on her when she received a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1991, but since then she has gained the reputation of a “cellist’s cellist,” a musician of finesse who nonetheless does not aspire to be the next Yo-Yo Ma and seems happy living a balanced life in Chicago. Her highly regarded CDs include a Naxos recording of Barber’s Cello Concerto, which she’ll play as part of a Christmas concert at the Lensic Performing Arts Center at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 24, with Joseph Illick conducting the Santa Fe Concert Association Orchestra. The Lensic is at 211 W. San Francisco St.; order tickets, $28 to $84 (student discounts are available), by calling the box office, 988-1234.
