THE LAWTUNES Season’s Briefings (The LawTunes)

Legal humor is often quite amusing, but more so if you’ve never been served a writ. Litigation attorney and record producer Lawrence Savell’s newest self-produced album offers simplistic lyrics, a retro folk/rock sound, and the occasional wailing saxophone through the course of 10 tinsel-time tunes. It’s a totally toe-tapping, hummable novelty record, enjoyable enough to play once— and probably no more— every holiday season. The song “Season’s Briefings” reminds us that there’s “nothing but plaintiffs everywhere” as it comments on everyone’s greed this time of year. “Was That You I Saw in Santa’s Suit?” plays off its jokey title to tell us the story of old Saint Nick’s lawsuit against humanity (he’s mad because we all wait until the last minute to be good). “Clothes in the Hamper, Tushies in the Tub” is a doo-wop tribute to Christmas Eve bathing. A couple of the tunes are fairly straightforward and without humor, like the effective country ballad
