EDGE OF DARKNESS Mel Gibson appears in a leading role for the first time since 2002’s Signs with this story of a homicide detective who uncovers a massive government conspiracy. Director Martin Campbell ( Casino Royale) adapted the film from his 1985 BBC miniseries. RayWinstone and Danny Huston co-star. Rated R. 108 minutes. Regal Stadium 14, Santa Fe; DreamCatcher, Española; Storyteller, Taos. (Not reviewed) NORTH FACE Not for the faint of heart, this chilling bergfilme is based on the true story of Toni Kurz and Andreas Hinterstoisser, mountaineers urged by Nazi propaganda to ascend the north face (or “murder wall”) of the Eiger, a 13,025-foot peak in Switzerland’s Bernese Alps. Director Philipp Stölzl and cinematographer Kolja Brandt expertly re-create the nail-biting climb and all its setbacks. The fictional romantic subplot, however, gives an otherwise tense, gripping tale an unnecessarily saccharine, maudlin undertone. Not rated, 126 minutes. In German with subtitles. The Screen, Santa Fe. (Laurel Gladden) THE PRIVATE LIVES OF PIPPA LEE A superb performance by Robin Wright Penn (currently shedding the Penn) illuminates Rebecca Miller’s intelligent and revealing look at a 50ish Connecticut matron’s inner wild child. The spot-on supporting cast is anchored by Alan Arkin as Pippa’s ailing but ebullient older husband and includes Blake Lively as her younger, wilder self, Maria Bello as her pill-popping mother, Zoe Kazan as her disaffected daughter, and (in an inspired bit of casting) Keanu Reeves as a brooding, Jesus-tattooed neighbor. This is the fourth feature from Miller (Arthur’s daughter), who expertly blends humor and pathos in exploring a life that encompasses both a past and a future. Rated R. 93 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. ( Jonathan Richards) WHEN IN ROME Kristen Bell is a comic actress worthy of leading roles, but she could have chosen a better project than this. She plays a woman who goes to Rome for a wedding, takes coins from a fountain of love, and finds several suitors magically attracted to her (including men played byWill Arnett and Jon Heder). Will her true love ( Josh Duhamel) find her through all the slapstick that follows? Rated PG-13. 91 minutes. Regal Stadium 14, Santa Fe; DreamCatcher, Española; Storyteller, Taos. (Not reviewed)
