Canticum Novum Chamber Orchestra and Chorus
offers a wideranging program at First Presbyterian Church at 8 p.m. Saturday,
June 12, and 4 p.m. Sunday, June 13, that culminates in the First Piano Concerto by Dmitri Shostakovich. Following several missteps that landed the composer in hot water with the commissars, Shostakovich restored his standing with this delightful concerto, filled with references to Bach, Haydn, and dance tunes. Here the soloist is Peter Vinograde, a professor at the Manhattan School of Music, who is noted as an interpreter of Bach and of 20th-century scores — specialties that intersect in this piece. The church is at 208 Grant Ave. Tickets are $30, children and students $15; call 988-1234.
