Michael Caine is in Death Wish mode as a military veteran and widower who takes to the violent British streets to exact vengeance on the young thugs who killed his only friend. Caine seems to grow as an actor in vehicles that get weaker and weaker, but even his strong performance doesn’t make this one work, and the movie is filled with chillingly unpleasant scenes of drug use, rape, and murder. It’s grotesquely fascinating to see Caine playing in this borderline exploitative material, and the film has one great line: “Listen, what you’re telling me is this escalating violence is due to a vigilante pensioner!” Rated R. 103 minutes.
