THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE Don’t expect a feature-length version of the Fantasia sequence, despite the fact that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (who wrote the 1797 poem that it was based on) gets a story credit. This film takes place in Manhattan and stars Nicolas Cage — sporting hair that’s more Van Halen than von Goethe — as a sorcerer with an apprentice (Jay Baruchel). Director Jon Turteltaub and the special-effects teams craft some nifty wizard duels, but the film doesn’t have anything else of interest, the humor is putrid, and Baruchel is too much of a dweeb to play the lead. Rated PG. 111 minutes. Regal Stadium 14, Santa Fe; DreamCatcher, Española; Reel Deal, Los Alamos; Storyteller, Taos. (Not reviewed) See review, Page 62. TOY STORY 3 Buzz, Woody, and the gang are back in a surprisingly dark and twisted sequel. With Andy now 17 and headed for college, the toys find themselves donated to a prison-like day-care center, from which they must break free. Along the way, the characters face their mortality, affirm the value of friendship, and come to cherish the things that shaped their lives. If your eyes are dry beneath your 3-D glasses, then you’re made of tougher stuff than I am. Rated G. 103 minutes. Screens in 3-D and 2-D at Regal Stadium 14, Santa Fe. Screens in 2-D only at DreamCatcher, Española. (Robert B. Ker) SPLICE Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley skillfully play two super-cool biochemists who splice human DNA with that of other animals, producing a woman with wings, amphibious lungs, ostrich legs, and a spiked tail. They name her Dren and look after her. The characters’ motivations are vague, but the film moves in some unexpected directions, and the special effects are freaky-deaky. Rated R. 104 minutes. Reel Deal, Los Alamos. (Robert B. Ker) THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE Bella (Kristen Stewart) wants Edward (Robert Pattinson) to “turn” her into a vampire, but he wants to marry her first. Werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner) thinks Bella should choose him instead. However, something more serious is at stake (ha ha): vengeful Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) is spawning an army of vicious “newborn” vampires. Director David Slade uses rapid-fire combat scenes to keep things from getting too mushy, and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg injects welcome lightheartedness. Rated PG-13. 124 minutes. Regal Stadium 14, Santa Fe; DreamCatcher, Española; Storyteller, Taos. (Laurel Gladden) loses perspective and borders on self-indulgence in the last third. Rated R. 90 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. (Robert Nott)
