Viva la otra fiesta!
If Fiestas de Santa Fe just isn’t your cuppa tequila but you’re still in a celebratory mood, north may be the best direction to head. Tucked between Taos and the town’s ski valley is the Old Blinking Light Kitchen & Cocktails (100 N.M. 150, 575-776-8787), a Northern New Mexico institution in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains known for its local flavor, live music, and dancing. From Thursday to Saturday, Sept. 9 to 11, the grassy surroundings of the “OBL” are home to Michael Hearne’s Big Barn Dance Music Festival, a popular annual outdoor event that draws regional and national folk, rock, Western, and country talent. Besides the Taos band Michael Hearne and South by Southwest, this year’s lineup includes Atlanta folk-harmony kings (and queens) Girlyman, kid-friendly family duo Trout Fishing in America, Nashville singer-songwriter Delbert McClinton, The Rifters, and many others. A three-day pass is $95; a pass for Thursday costs $30; Friday, $35; Saturday, $45. For a full schedule, online tickets, and more festival information, visit www.bigbarndance.com. Tickets are also available by calling 575-776-8787, Ext. 2.
