ANIMAL KINGDOM This crime drama from the land down under promises twists and turns. It centers on a brood of robbers and drug dealers in Melbourne’s underworld and the matriarch who watches over them. Guy Pearce ( Memento) plays a detective on their trail. Rated R. 112 minutes. Regal DeVargas, Santa Fe. (Not reviewed)

THE AMERICAN Anton Corbijn seems to have been convinced that he was working in full European auteur mode when he made

The American, but his movie just wound up boring, not artistic. George Clooney is the American, but his charm is under wraps, and he’s given no room to grab hold of the movie. He spends long periods building a gun. The dialogue is sparse and not very good, and the plot never adds up. Rated R. 105 minutes. In English and Italian with subtitles. Regal Stadium 14, Santa Fe; DreamCatcher, Española; Reel Deal, Los Alamos; Storyteller, Taos. (Jonathan Richards)

CAIRO TIME Lonely Juliette Grant (Patricia Clarkson) travels to Cairo to visit her husband. While there, she unexpectedly falls for his best friend, Tareq Khalifa (Alexander Siddig). No word on whether this love affair comes with a side of eating or praying. Rated PG. 90 minutes. CCA Cinematheque, Santa Fe. (Not reviewed)
