Serious thoughts weave through the holiday glitter as Mercury conjuncts Pluto this week. An astrological weather system that began in early November and insisted that unexpected bits of truth pour out — a cosmic WikiLeaks on a personal and political level — finishes with a flourish this weekend and asks us what we want to do with this new understanding.

Some turning point or decision may seem imminent. But resolution may not be as close as it seems. Mercury leaves Sagittarius and enters Capricorn, conjuncts Pluto midweek, and then retrogrades on Dec. 10 and conjuncts Pluto again.

Because Mercury soon turns retrograde and can complicate pre-holiday shopping, mailing, and traveling, it pays to make sure holiday packages are well wrapped, labeled, and out early. Finalize travel plans, but be ready to keep them flexible.

The weekend starts out with a ruggedly individualist Mars-Uranus square that can give us the gumption to take on tough challenges but can also spark flammable situations. We may be going along feeling happy and focused under these stars, but if someone challenges us it can be real difficult not to respond in kind.

Midweek, we get a chance to rethink earlier impulsive decisions and assess what needs to be done next. We may be inspired to do a flurry of work as Mars and the moon join Mercury in ambitious Capricorn, but we have to use this willful muscle wisely and avoid the temptation to be manipulative. We can be hard on ourselves now — let’s celebrate everything we have accomplished.

Friday, Dec. 3: It’s an outspoken, abrasive day with explosive undertones as Mars squares Uranus under a Scorpio moon. Midday, hold on to hope. Tonight, we need expressions of trustworthiness.

Saturday, Dec. 4: In the early morning, eccentricity encourages positive changes. Options open midday as the moon enters Sagittarius. Think globally and act locally; pay attention to world news and attend to travel plans. Our spirits are expansive.

Sunday, Dec. 5: Depression sniffs at the edges even as the new moon in Sagittarius gets us moving in body, mind, or soul. If we’ve felt stuck before, we don’t now. Put safety first. Be aware that some psyches are feeling exposed. A decision made today may need to be reconsidered or worked upon again and again.

Monday, Dec. 6: It’s a cooperative morning. Reflexes soar midday; snap decisions may be faulty but sudden insights may be truth breaking through as the moon conjuncts Mars. Later, we see what needs work but may try to manipulate others into doing things for us as the moon enters Capricorn. Tonight, we need our efforts appreciated.

Tuesday, Dec. 7: It’s a productive, determined, and tough but loving day. Rethink recent impulsive decisions and plan the next step. Shoot for steady accomplishments, don’t try to do too much, and celebrate each step as a sun-Saturn sextile boosts our work. Deal with any bureaucracies or stray logistics now.

Wednesday, Dec. 8: Hearts can feel tender as Venus sextiles Pluto, but this may pry open our hearts. Look for tangible ways to express feelings later in the day. Gestures reach the empty spots better than words do.

Thursday, Dec. 9: Erratic communications remind us that it’s time to back up computers and make sure we’re all on the same page. If relationship issues flare up midday, soothe rather than feed the fire. Roll with changes this quirky evening.
