British director Anthony Geffen’s suspenseful and beautifully photographed documentary explores the fate and psyche of climber George Mallory, who disappeared on Mount Everest in 1924. More than seven decades after Mallory’s death, American mountaineer Conrad Anker discovered his remains 800 feet from Everest’s summit. In 2007 Anker, along with British climber Leo Houlding, retraced Mallory’s fateful journey, sometimes using equipment from the period, in an attempt to prove that Mallory could have reached the summit before perishing. Geffen deftly captures how Anker’s and Mallory’s lives are intertwined with their thirst for adventure. Opens Saturday, Dec. 25. Rated PG. 93 minutes. The Screen, Santa Fe. (Rob DeWalt)
