A new memorial day dawning
In Santa Fe, Friday, Dec. 31, will be recognized not only as New Year’s Eve but also as “Light Up a Life Day,” as it has been declared by Mayor David Coss. On this, the 20th anniversary of Presbyterian Medical Services Foundation’s Light Up a Life program, the Plaza will be illuminated with more than a thousand farolitos in remembrance of loved ones who have passed away and in support of those going through hardships. Proceeds from the event go to The Hospice Center in Santa Fe and Northwest New Mexico Hospice in Farmington. The farolitos and the presence of volunteers, family, and friends are intended to comfort those who have lost loved ones by reminding them that there are others enduring grief. People can purchase a farolito for $20 by calling The Hospice Center (988-2211) or visiting www.pmsfsouthwest.org. Music, food, hot drinks, and a short ceremony consisting of tributes made by family members, hospice care providers, and community leaders begin at 5:30 p.m. on the Plaza.
