In Santa Fe, Fri­day, Dec. 31, will be rec­og­nized not only as New Year’s Eve but also as “Light Up a Life Day,” as it has been de­clared by Mayor David Coss. On this, the 20th an­niver­sary of Pres­by­te­rian Med­i­cal Ser­vices Foun­da­tion’s Light Up a Life pro­gram, the Plaza will be il­lu­mi­nated with more than a thou­sand faroli­tos in re­mem­brance of loved ones who have passed away and in sup­port of those go­ing through hard­ships. Pro­ceeds from the event go to The Hospice Cen­ter in Santa Fe and North­west New Mex­ico Hospice in Farm­ing­ton. The faroli­tos and the pres­ence of vol­un­teers, fam­ily, and friends are in­tended to com­fort those who have lost loved ones by re­mind­ing them that there are oth­ers en­dur­ing grief. Peo­ple can pur­chase a farolito for $20 by call­ing The Hospice Cen­ter (988-2211) or vis­it­ing www.pms­f­south­west.org. Mu­sic, food, hot drinks, and a short cer­e­mony con­sist­ing of trib­utes made by fam­ily mem­bers, hospice care providers, and com­mu­nity lead­ers be­gin at 5:30 p.m. on the Plaza.
