Seasonal backlash: Santa Fe Community Orchestra

Pasatiempo - - Random Acts -

The Santa Fe Community Orchestra, an ensemble of accomplished amateurs, bucks the trend of the month by presenting a concert that has nothing to do with holiday music. On Sunday, Dec. 14, at 2:30 p.m., at St. Francis Auditorium (New Mexico Museum of Art, 107 W. Palace Ave.), Oliver Prezant conducts the ensemble in Tchaikovsky’s emotionally forward Symphony No. 4 along with two less-frequently encountered works. Franz Berwald, who might be described as a Swedish Mendelssohn, met with only moderate success in the opera house and left music for a while to manage a glassworks and a sawmill. At least his opera Estrella de Soria achieved a succès d’éstime when it was produced in 1862; its Overture, which will be played here, suggests it deserved at least that. Also on the program is Vaughan Williams’ bucolic The Lark Ascending, featuring violinist Kay Newnam. This is a free concert, although donations are appreciated.
