Play­ing up a storm: Tony Fur­tado

If you want to see some daz­zling fin­ger­pick­ing on gui­tar and banjo, check out Tony Fur­tado. He plays Gig Per­for­mance Space (1808 Sec­ond St., at 7:30 p.m. on Wed­nes­day, Jan. 14. Fur­tado sur­prised him­self by win­ning the Grand Na­tional Banjo Cham­pi­onship in Kansas in 1987. Five years later, he re­leased his de­but al­bum, Swamped. His new­est CD is due out this year. Fur­tado also has writ­ten in­struc­tion man­u­als for banjo and gui­tar. The en­gag­ing mu­si­cian, ap­pear­ing with his band, plays in the realms of Americana and in­die rock, with a lit­tle jazz and Celtic folk thrown in.
