Brentano String Quartet return

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS -

The Brentano String Quartet made a memorably strong showing when Santa Fe Pro Musica brought the group to town most recently, two seasons back. For their return recital, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, the players offer two classics — Haydn’s Quartet in B-flat major (Op. 50, No. 1) and Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” Quartet — plus a recent work, James MacMillan’s String Quartet No. 3 (from 2007). One of Scotland’s leading musical lights, MacMillan’s scores often reflect his predilections for spiritual or Catholic religious subjects, Renaissance historical events, and social morality. The performance takes place at the St. Francis Auditorium (New Mexico Museum of Art, 107 W. Palace Ave.). Tickets ($10 to $65) are available from Tickets Santa Fe at the Lensic (505-988-1234, www.ticketssantafe.org). — J.M.K.
