International insanity: Taraf de Locos

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS -

Proudly proclaiming its international leanings with its name, Taraf de Locos (translated from the Romanian and Spanish as “band of crazies”) consists of five childhood friends from the Bay Area. Together they play spirited music from around the world — including Spain, Albania, Brazil, Macedonia, Tajikistan, and Mexico. To cover so much ground, the bandmates rely on familiar instruments like guitar, violin, and trumpet, and less familiar ones like the güira and timple. Those interested in finding out what exactly a timple is are encouraged to hear Taraf de Locos play at Gig Performance Space (1808 Second St., www.gigsantafe.com) on Friday, March 20. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $20.
