Combo’s collaboration: Open Loose
Jazz combos traditionally aim for a tight sound. Open Loose does not fully buck this trend — despite the trio’s name. Though the players impose no restrictions on their improvisatory wanderings, they are fully capable of playing in the pocket. Consisting of Mark Helias on bass, Tony Malaby on tenor sax, and Tom Rainey on drums, Open Loose explores the divide between collaboration and individual experimentation. All three avant-garde jazz musicians are considered exemplary on their respective instruments, and bandleader Helias has achieved further distinction as a composer. The trio visits Gig Performance Space (1808 Second St., www.gigsantafe.com) on Saturday, April 4. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $20 at the door. — L.B.
