Digital delight: Richard Smith

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS -

Head over to Gig Performance Space at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 10, to witness the fantastically fleet fingers of Richard Smith. The guitarist is conversant with the techniques and musical ideas of Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, Joe Pass, and Scott Joplin, to name just a few. A native of Kent, England, he began playing at five, when his father showed him chords for a song by Atkins and Merle Travis. At eleven, he was invited to share the stage with Atkins at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London; the veteran guitarist later said, “He can play anything I know, only better.” Now based in Nashville, Smith is a stellar practitioner of fingerstyle guitar. Actually, he is accustomed to using a thumbpick and four fingernails, also using the thumbpick as a plectrum when flatpicking is more appropriate to the song — in short, he can play just about anything, really fast. Admission to the gig at Gig (1808 Second St., www.gigsantafe.org) is $20. — Paul Weideman
