Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS -

Danceable yet devotional, Las 7 salves de La Magdalena (The 7 Songs of Praise for the Magdalene), the first album by Raquel Z. Rivera & Ojos de Sofía, combines Puerto Rican jíbaro music and Dominican palos and bachata, among other Latin American genres. In 2011, the album hit the Top 20 World Music Charts Europe at number 16. Singer-songwriter Rivera, who is a visiting scholar at the University of New Mexico, is the co-editor of the anthology

Reggaeton and author of New York Ricans From the Hip Hop Zone. She offers a cutting-edge form of traditional music that transcends popular, commercial appeal on the strength of her lyrics, musicianship, and earnest enthusiasm. The group, which is touring New Mexico on a grant from the National Performance Network, in collaboration with Albuquerque’s Outpost Performance Space, plays Gig Performance Space (1808 Second St.) on Sunday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, $20, are available at the door.
