Bass lineup: The Mil-Tones Brass Band

Pasatiempo - - ACTS RANDOM -

The Mil-Tones Brass Band, which plays St. John’s College on Wednesday, June 17, has a great big sound, and one of the reasons is because it’s heavy on the deep end. “Being a drummer, I love bass,” said Milton Villarubia III, “and now that I’m a bandleader I wanted as many basses as possible. Everybody said that’s a horrible idea, but it sounds great.” The instrumentation includes bass drum, tuba, two sousaphones, baritone sax, and tenor trombone, as well as snare drum, trumpets, and guitar. On stage, the group plays in three realms: traditional New Orleans jazz, pop (think Led Zeppelin and George Michael), and Eastern European. The free concert is in the Music on the Hill series presented on the athletic field at St. John’s College (1160 Camino de Cruz Blanca). The fun begins at 6 p.m. For details, call 505-984-6000 or visit ww.sjc.edu. — Paul Weideman
