Not too long after Kevin Burke started playing the fiddle as a young boy in London, he found a special attraction to Irish music, and discovered that the well-known fiddlers from the Emerald Isle used certain techniques you couldn’t learn from books. Burke, who plays at Gig Performance Space at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 19, found out about musicalnote “ornamentations” called crans, rolls, and shakes, and then was confronted by something called the “nyaah.” It took him years to master that particular knack of expressiveness, so that his listeners would say, “He has the nyaah!” Over the past 37 years, Burke has recorded more than a dozen albums. Hear his awesome but temperate technique at Gig (1808 Second St.). Tickets are $20 at the door. See — Paul Weideman
