The Son also rises: Son Como Son

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS - — J.L.

The Santa Fe Bandstand summer concert series on the Plaza features music made for dancing. This year’s lineup begins Tuesday, July 7, from 6 to 8:45 p.m., with Son Como Son, Albuquerque’s favorite Cuban salsa ensemble — sure to get your feet moving and your hips shaking. Trombonist, vocalist, percussionist, composer, and arranger César Bauvallet started playing in cabarets in Havana when he was seventeen, and he spent his twenties touring Europe and Latin America. He founded Son Como Son — which means “they are what they are” — in 1993, the year after he moved to Albuquerque, and the group is now one of the longest-standing salsa ensembles in the region, playing at the Cooperage Restaurant in Albuquerque, the New Mexico Jazz Workshop, and the Telluride Jazz Festival. Bandstand concerts are free. Visit www.santafebandstand.org.
