The third in a series of four concerts at Collected Works Bookstore (202 Galisteo St., 505-988-4226) features trumpeter JQ Whitcomb and the What the What band at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 3. Whitcomb, a Santa Fe native, is a veteran of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival and of the jazz scene in Shanghai, where he lived from 2003 to 2010. His song “Always a Reason” from Tales of Enchantment, a 2014 album by his band Five Below, won a New Mexico Music Award for best jazz song. What the What, with bassist Jon Gagan and drummer Robby Rothschild, was formed in 2013. “This group is pretty focused on original compositions, mostly by Jon Gagan, but we do a couple of my tunes as well,” Whitcomb said. “It’s definitely more groove-based, more funky than a lot of the other jazz groups that Jon and I are both in. Robby’s percussion setup is pretty unique, using a cajon as well as djembe and a high-hat.” What the What is also the name of a new CD that will be available at the concert — sales benefit radio station KSFR-FM 101.1. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by calling the station at 505-428-1527 and at the door.
