Swingin’ and singin’: Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS -

The Santa Fe events in this year’s New Mexico Jazz Festival start out warm and swinging with a Wednesday, July 15, concert featuring Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers. The glamorous lead singer intensifies the retro vibe of her chosen musical domain — classic blues and jazz — with a sexy stage presence, vintage dresses, and just the right vocal chops for the job. The Bay Area native, who began singing in 1988, works with a ballsy septet that includes saxophonists Jules Broussard (whose career includes work with Alice Coltrane and Santana) and Charles McNeal (Boz Scaggs). Her third album, Miss Smith To You!, features three originals co-written with pianist Chris Siebert and a handful of standards such as “‘Deed I Do,” “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” “Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl,” and “Jumpin’ in the Morning.” This free concert is a collaboration with the St. John’s College Music on the Hill series. The fun starts at 6 p.m. on the athletic field of the college, 1160 Camino de Cruz Blanca; call 505-984-6000. — Paul Weideman
