BICYCLE THIEVES

Pasatiempo - - MOVING IMAGES -

Vittorio De Sica's 1948 Italian neorealist masterpiece, about a father who requires a bicycle for income and one day finds it stolen, remains as deep and powerful as ever. The photography is beautiful and the story is sympathetic to the father but nonjudgmental of his action as he, stripped of his pride, discovers how far he will go to protect a steady job in a cruel and unfair world. Screens as part of the Auteurs series. Not rated. 93 minutes. In Italian with subtitles. Center for Contemporary Arts. (Robert Ker)
