Santa Fe’s vibrant flamenco scene — with musicians and dancers taking up residency in the city’s restaurants and theaters and classes popping up around town — can trace its roots to the grande dame of the art form, dancer María Benítez. She came to Santa Fe in the ‘60s with the idea of making a living as a flamenco artist. She established a company, founded a school, and formed a troupe to highlight the talents of young performers. Today her protégés continue her passion. Said dancer Miquela Wiegel, “We’re all little reflections of María.” On the cover is a photo of Carola Zertuche with singer Jose Cortes by Rosalie O’Connor; courtesy Aspen Santa Fe Ballet.
