Jazz for the chakras: 3rd Eye Trio

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS -

The 3rd Eye Trio plays The High Note (132 W. Water St.), at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 24. Abraham Burton, the trio’s saxophonist, released his debut album, Closest to the Sun, in 1994. Joining him were pianist Marc Cary (whose Rhodes Ahead band played July 19 in Santa Fe as part of the New Mexico Jazz Festival), drummer Eric McPherson, and bassist Billy Johnson. In the 2000s, Burton has played with the Mingus Big Band, with whom he’s recorded three albums. His bandmates are both drummers: McPherson (who has also played on albums by Fred Hersch, Steve Davis, and many other jazz stars) and Nasheet Waits (whose discography includes sideman duties with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Antonio Hart, Andrew Hill, and Jason Moran). Tickets for the gig are $55 to $150; call 505-670-6482. — Paul Weideman
