Movers and shakers: Big Sam’s Funky Nation
Does it matter what a funky donkey is as long as you shake it to the best of your ability? Probably not — so just get yours down to the Santa Fe Bandstand on the Plaza for Big Sam’s Funky Nation on Thursday, July 30, from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to dance along with Big Sam Williams, formerly of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and one of the finest slide trombone players to come out of New Orleans. In addition to “Shake That Funky Donkey,” the band’s repertoire includes “See Me Dance” and “Move It Funky,” among other rousing numbers. But all you really have to know about this concert is that Big Sam dances and plays the trombone at the same time, and you are quite unlikely to sit still for any of it. Bandstand concerts are free. — J.L.
