“Siguiriyas are the darkest, most tragic palos. They’re also from Jerez, where I was born. It is like the Mount Olympus of flamenco — the ‘padre.’ I have to reach inside. It’s like the most extreme emotion that a person can feel. The letras say things about death, about failing. ‘My mouth fills with blood.’

“I was in my twenties when I danced with María Benítez. I come from Spain, and she still impressed me. She was strong. She had something not every dancer has — she was an artist. She had the spirit. María created a community in Santa Fe, not just an audience. The shows at the Lodge have been running for almost 30 years.”
