Itinerant band: Davina and the Vagabonds

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS -

The Santa Fe Bandstand on the Plaza will be rollicking and swinging to the timeless hybrid of New Orleans blues, classic jazz, soul, and gospel perfected by Davina and the Vagabonds on Tuesday, Aug. 18, beginning at 7:15 p.m. Davina could be an Andrews sister reincarnated as Janis Joplin as channeled by Amy Winehouse — but she’s no one but herself, in her petticoats and fascinators, belting out standards and a roster of originals in which the lyrics are just as important as the musical style. Davina and the Vagabonds is a five-member touring band based out of Minneapolis, formed on a whim in 2006 in order to claim a local open house gig. Davina, the lead singer, originally moved to Minnesota from Key West, where she was a street musician. The group’s sound is big and brassy, especially for such a small band, and has have several albums to its credit, including Black Cloud (2011) and Sunshine (2014).
