A tune­smith and a poet: Larry Mitchell and Joy Harjo

Award-win­ning mu­si­cian Larry Mitchell plays the Santa Fe Band­stand at 6 p.m. Wed­nes­day, Aug. 19. Mitchell has recorded six CDs and has toured with Tracy Chap­man and Ric Ocasek, among oth­ers. He is also a pro­ducer and en­gi­neer — he has won 26 New Mex­ico Mu­sic Awards, and he and flutist Robert Mira­bal won a Grammy in 2007 for the al­bum Totemic Flute

Chants. Mitchell tours with his own trio and with Mira­bal, Shel­ley Morn­ing­song, Dawn Avery, and Joy Harjo. Poet and mu­si­cian Harjo plays the band­stand next, start­ing at 7:15 p.m. Mitchell pro­duced her play, Wings of Night Sky, Wings of Morn­ing Light, which pre­miered at the Mu­seum of the Amer­i­can West in Los An­ge­les. A re­cip­i­ent of the Gov­er­nor’s Award for Ex­cel­lence in the Arts and a Guggen­heim Fel­low­ship, she per­forms both solo and with Joy Harjo and the Po­etic Jus­tice Re­vival.
