Mixed Media Santa Fe Street Fashion Week

Pasatiempo - - CONTENTS -

Who knew that Santa Fe was such a hotbed of international fashion design that it deserved its own special week — just as in Manhattan and Paris? So thinks Mayor Javier Gonzales. He has proclaimed Aug. 24 through Saturday, Aug. 29, “Santa Fe Street Fashion Week” to highlight awareness of just how much cutting-edge fashion is made and sold in the city. The crown jewel of the week is a runway fashion show, called The Show, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 28, on the rooftop and ballroom at La Fonda (100 E. San Francisco St.), tickets to which are $175 per person. (A portion of the proceeds benefits Stand Up to Cancer, an organization that supports funding for cancer research.) The event is coordinated by Amy Shea, a brand strategist who specializes in fashion, and features only items that can be bought at shops in Santa Fe or were created by local designers. Santa Fe designers showing their looks include Orlando Dugi and his label, DUGI, a line of special-occasion and eveningwear, with hand-beaded clutches and gowns; Lily Falk, proprietor of Lily of the West, a custom dress shop on Palace Avenue; and Danielle Foster-Herbst of Atelier Danielle, who is influenced by the luxurious, flowing fabrics of kimonos and saris. Many of the fashions shown from outside of Santa Fe are sold at such high-end retailers as Goler and Santa Fe Dry Goods, including designs by Lars Andersson, United Nude, and Ivan Grundahl, and represent a range of looks popular in Santa Fe that fall under the umbrella of “comfortable hippie goth,” though some of the shoes are less organic and more architectural in feel. General admission includes a champagne and canapés reception as well as a keepsake bag of beauty items and other goods. All guests of The Show are entered into a fashion raffle.
