Grand illusions: Joel Ward
Old-fashioned stage magic is served with a side dish of comedy by illusionist Joel Ward, who performs at the Jean Cocteau Cinema (418 Montezuma Ave.) this weekend. Ward, who became interested in magic at age six when he was asked to assist a magician at a school assembly, emphasizes audience participation as he thrills onlookers by escaping locked boxes and turning fire into scarves and scarves into doves. His slick stage presence has earned him fame on the corporate and cruise entertainment circuits, spots on The Tonight Show and Tosh.0, and the headlining gig in Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus show, Boom A Ring. Ward performs on Friday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. and at 2 and 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12. Tickets, $20, with discounts available, may be purchased at www.jeancocteaucinema.com. — J.L.
