Jeff Cochran: Crest of Light
2015, oil on canvas
Manitou Galleries, 225 Canyon Road, 505-986-0440 Taos-based painter Jeff Cochran’s earthy renditions of landscapes and New Mexico missions, rendered using an impasto technique, explore pastoral rural settings in varying light and seasons. Cochran is known for his early, large portraits of chimpanzees, one of which he gifted to primatologist Jane Goodall. An organic farmer as well as an artist, he likens farming to creating art. “The different colors of plants and soil and mulch contrasting with furrows and beds are like a three-dimensional painting,” he states. The exhibit High Desert Harvest: Jeff Cochran opens with a 5 p.m. reception on Friday, Oct. 23, and includes live music by Brazilian guitarist Zooga Málaga.
