Bell, book, and cabaret
Whether you’re in the mood on Halloween night for some scary-zany wackiness or some horrifyingly wacky zaniness, the Jewel Box Cabaret should get you to shakin’. The cast has devised a Hell on Heels song-and-dance extravaganza in the style of a Las Vegas variety revue. These people are specialists in “the art of gender illusion.” In other words, there’s burlesque, and sometimes (even if you’re good) you just can’t tell what sex people are. Plus they have wonderfully glittery costumes and makeup and expressions. The twenty-one-and-over show has been known to prompt people (even after enjoying cocktails from the cabaret bar) to exclaim, “Am I in New Mexico?” The cabaret is led by performers with interesting names, including Guava Chiffon, Chastity St. Jaymes, and Krisha Licious, not to mention Madame Marie Antoinette Du Barry (nearly a real French person) and CoCo Caliente. The Jewel Box Cabaret is in its third year at the María Benítez Cabaret Theatre at the Lodge at Santa Fe (750 N. St. Francis Drive). Doors open on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 7:30 p.m.; the Jewel Box hits the stage at 8:30. VIP seating is $20 and can be reserved by calling 505-428-7781. General admission seating is $15 at the door.
