The funky, the eclectic, and the vintage are for sale at the 17th annual Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival, held the weekend before Thanksgiving as a kick-off to the holiday shopping season. Before — or instead of — heading to the mall, you can select one-of-a-kind items from over 80 local and national artists who work with recycled materials to create everything from quilts and jewelry to purses and lamps. All goods must consist of at least 75 percent recycled material, and the fair includes both crafts and fine art. Artists repurpose silverware and safety pins, tin cans and old picture frames, buttons and teacups, broken glass plates and rusty children’s toys. The fair is like a cross between an antiques show and a thrift store, with a wide range of prices, so it’s possible to find gifts for hard-to-please people who already have everything. The popular Trash Fashion Show and Costume Contest, on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m., features wearable looks as well as way-out couture creations made from materials as diverse as bicycle parts, discarded umbrellas, and plastic forks. Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival is at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center (201 W. Marcy St.), on Nov. 20, from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday night’s fair admission is $5; admission to the Friday-night Trash Fashion Show is $15 to $20 and includes admission to the fair. Admission is free on Saturday and Sunday. For information visit www.recyclesantafe.org. — Jennifer Levin
