Celestial sounds: Blue Sky Trio

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS -

Michael Handler — better known as “Harmonica Mike” — used to play with a band called Country Blues Review, but about a year ago he started jamming casually on guitar at social gatherings with singer/songwriter James Harlan. It went so well they started getting little gigs around town. Now joined by flautist Hope Kiah, the newly named Blue Sky Trio plays its first gig as part of the singer/songwriter series at the High Note (132 W. Water St., 505-991-8771). Handler describes their sound as a cross between blues and jazz, with plenty of original songs as well as a few jazz standards. The Blue Sky Trio plays on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m. as the opening act for Jaime Michaels, a folk singer and songwriter from Santa Fe, who performs with Melissa Greener, a singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Nashville. Michaels is about to release his tenth album, Once Upon a Different Time. There is a $5 cover charge. — J.L.
