FACES, Ben Haggard’s community-based portrait project
If you’re local, chances are good that you’ll recognize someone you know among the multitude of portraits on exhibit in FACES Santa Fe, Ben Haggard’s community-focused portrait project. Haggard, based in town, began the project in 2010 as a hands-on, face-to-face social networking experiment. Doing away with digital social media, the project spread by word of mouth. Haggard started by painting portraits of friends and family members who then invited their friends to sit, and they invited their friends, and so forth. FACES opens in SITE Santa Fe’s SITElab on Friday, Jan. 22, with a free reception at 5:30 p.m. The show is on view through Feb. 13.
Santa Fe is one of three cities whose residents Haggard has rendered in paint. He has also created portraits of people in Berlin and San Francisco. Haggard does free live portrait demonstrations during the run of the show at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 25, 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26, and 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27. Proceeds from the sale of the portraits benefit SITE’s exhibition programs as well as the artist. SITE has also engaged students in area schools with projects related to FACES Santa Fe. The student-produced portraits will be exhibited at SITE on April 22. — Michael Abatemarco
