Strings and skins: Trio en Medio
An intriguing mix of f lavors is promised to listeners at the Saturday, Feb. 20, concert by Trio en Medio. Group member Brahim Fribgane, a native of Morocco, has performed the oud on albums by guitarist Leni Stern, turntablist DJ Logic, free-jazz bassist William Parker, and on six albums by the jazz group Club d’Elf, but for this concert he sticks to percussion and dumbek (hand drum). For the Trio En Medio date at Gig Performance Space (1808 Second St., www.gigsantafe.com), string play is provided by Bruce Dunlap, a jazz guitarist whose résumé includes multiple albums with singer Sara K. and with f lutist Herbie Mann, and who is also the owner of Gig. The band’s third member is pianist and composer John Rangel, a fixture on the Santa Fe jazz scene known for his role in the Tribute Trio as well as his excellent 2006 record, Pages. The music starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20 at the door. — P.W.
