Beyond jazz: Mitochondriacs

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS - — Paul Weideman

Mitochondriacs, a Santa Fe band, take the stage at Gig Performance Space (1808 Second St.) on Friday, March 25. The members — Doug Wooldridge, guitar; Jeff Sussmann, percussion; Jack Kotz, bass; and Casey Andersen, piano — play original compositions and create music spontaneously. “We have found that after playing together for a few years, our improvised work has reached new levels of harmonic and rhythmic depth while retaining a sense of immediacy and freshness,” Kotz said. “Our compositions definitely have their roots in jazz, yet push the rhythmic and harmonic boundaries that one might associate with that tradition. In doing this, we always strive to keep it musical, fun, and very listenable.” The music starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20. See www.gigsantafe.com for information.
