Tom Miller: Trap
2015, paint, wood, resin, cinderblock, hardware
James Kelly Contemporary, 1611 Paseo de Peralta, 505-989-1601 Tom Miller’s first exhibition with James Kelly, Set to Topple & Equivalent Architecture, continues through May 21. Miller uses wall-building materials in sculptures in which he explores the themes of inclusion and exclusion implied by the building of walls. Miller deliberately invests each piece with instability during construction, imparting a sense of impermanence and unreliability. Accompanying the sculptures are black-and-white bas-relief paintings of walls and wall-building materials that convey concepts seen in stark and contradictory terms, and gray paintings that reveal more complex details.
