Magic fingers: Richard Smith

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS -

Guitar magician Richard Smith returns to Gig Performance Space on Friday, April 1. The native of Kent, England, has played guitar since age five. His first inspirations were Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed, but he was soon learning licks by Django Reinhardt — and over the years he has made music with Les Paul, Joe Pass, Earl Klugh, and the renowned Australian finger-picker Tommy Emmanuel, who said, “If you like my playing, you should hear Richard Smith! The world champion!” One of Smith’s predilections is playing marches by John Philip Sousa, and it’s hard to believe this is just one person playing one guitar. He is also f luent on the violin and banjo. The concert at Gig (1808 Second St., starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20 at the door. — P.W.
