Of a feather: Birds of Chicago

Pasatiempo - - RANDOM ACTS -

Gospel-infused soulfulness and a deeply melodious take on Americana characterize Birds of Chicago, a precious gem of a band that sparkles amid a sea of autotuned singers and unnecessary trills. In this husband-and-wife duo, JT Nero writes the songs and Allison Russell belts out the lyrics (and occasionally writes them, as well). His backup vocals function as an extra instrument, creating a varied richness in the delivery of tracks on their new CD, Real Midnight, produced by Joe Henry. Birds of Chicago play at Skylight (139 W. San Francisco St.) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 9. Tickets, $15 and $25 in advance, are available at www.holdmyticket.com (505-886-1251), or at the door for $22.
