How very: Heathers the Musical
In 1988, the idea of mass murdering one’s high school classmates was the stuff of dark cult fantasy, not the evening news. When Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) and her bad-boy boyfriend J.D. (Christian Slater) started killing their teen enemies in the soon-to-be-cult film classic Heathers, Generation X greeted their deeds with characteristic cynical detachment and lasting affection. A quarter of a century later, such crimes have become nearly commonplace, while Heathers has been reborn as a campy musical, adapted for the stage by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe. Theater students at Santa Fe University of Art and Design perform this sendup of mean-girl clique culture, playing teens monochromatically dressed to kill and wielding croquet mallets. Heathers the Musical opens at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 22 (with a 6 p.m. gala), at the Greer Garson Theatre (1600 St. Michael’s Drive). Additional performances are on Saturday, April 23, and Sunday, April 24, as well as April 29, 30, and May 1. The show takes place on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets, $15 with discounts available, can be purchased by calling 505-988-1234 or by visiting www.ticketssantafe.org. — J.L.
