Book launch for Lucy Gent Foma’s Funded

Pasatiempo - - NEWS -

In the nonprofit world, it’s well known that money attracts money. The more grants an organization gets, the more likely it is that other foundations will take its proposals seriously. The same principle is at work for people who win fellowship after fellowship, allowing them to travel frequently, write, or create art without a day job and do interesting work in exotic locations without maxing out their credit cards. Lucy Gent Foma, who grew up in Santa Fe, won nearly $250,000 in fellowships, scholarships, and grants between 2010 and 2015, including a Fulbright fellowship and a Rotary scholarship. Though she describes herself as an average student, she’s had a variety of overseas fellowships, and she earned her master’s degree without accruing any debt because of a particular talent for getting others to pay her way. Now she’s written a how-to guide for anyone who wants to know the secrets to her success, Funded! How I Leveraged My Passion to Live a Fulfilling Life and How You Can Too (Morgan James Publishing). Funded! is a step-by-step guide, complete with worksheets, for identifying and crafting a compelling personal story, finding a mentor, creating a proposal, preparing a statement of purpose or “elevator pitch,” and honing one’s personal statement until it shines. There are also practical tips on preparing for extended time abroad and detailed guidance on different types of funding sources. Foma, currently a Transportation Scholar at Bandelier National Monument, also discusses her experiences — beginning with her first trip to Africa, when she was ten years old — with her parents, African drum and dance teachers Eric and Elise Gent. There is a book launch party for Funded! at the Railyard Performance Center (1611 Paseo de Peralta; 505-982-8309) on Saturday, April 30, at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free. — Jennifer Levin
